Quebrada de Humahuaca and Serranías del Hornocal: 4x4 Expedition to Cerro de las 14 Cores
Departing from Salta and heading toward the province of Jujuy, this full-day expedition covers 516 km through the Quebrada de Humahuaca (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and continues on to the impressive Serranías del Hornocal, known as the 14-Colored Hill. The itinerary includes visits to Andean villages such as Purmamarca at the foot of the Cerro de los Siete Colores, Tilcara, the Tropic of Capricorn marker in Huacalera, and the historic chapel in Uquía. In Uquía, you’ll transfer to a rugged 4x4 vehicle to begin the mountainous ascent to the Hornocal viewpoint, at an altitude of 4,350 meters, revealing one of the most spectacular panoramic views in northern Argentina.

Approximately 2-hour stop to admire the impressive Hill of 14 Colors at the trip’s highest point (4,350 meters above sea level).Humahuaca: A short 20-minute stop in the town’s historic center for a quick walk.Huacalera: 15-minute photo stop at the sundial marking the Tropic of Capricorn.Maimará: A 15-minute photo stop in front of the colorful slopes of the Paleta del Pintor.Tumbaya: A 15-minute rest stop for refreshments before the final descent.Return by road to the city of Salta.IMPORTANT INFORMATIONLunch / Meals: Due to the travel time in 4x4 vehicles, there is no stop for lunch at restaurants (the stop in Humahuaca lasts only 20 minutes). It is strongly recommended that you bring a light trail snack (packed lunch) and bottled water.Extreme Altitude: The maximum altitude of 4,350 meters above sea level is reached at the Hornocal viewpoint. It is recommended to eat light meals the day before, stay well-hydrated, and wear windproof and cold-resistant clothing.Dirt/Gravel Road: The stretch to Hornocal is traveled by 4x4 vehicle on a gravel/mountain road.Meeting Point: Pickup from central hotels within 15 blocks of Plaza 9 de Julio. Outside this area, the meeting point is at 39 Buenos Aires Street, Salta.Accessibility: Not wheelchair accessible; stroller access is available.Weather Conditions: Since this activity takes place at high altitude, safe weather conditions are required.
